The following will explain the most important idea in the history of social analysis. The notion (actually, it’s a description of reality that is all around us but rarely noticed) has been around for many centuries. It was first discovered by late-medieval monks working in Spain. It was given scientific precision in the classical period. It is the basis of advances in social theory in the 20th century.
In fact, it is an essential part of the case for freedom. It was the basis of the belief of our ancestors that they could throw off tyrannical rule and still not have society descend into poverty and chaos. The failure to comprehend this idea is at the very root of the pervasive bias against liberty and free enterprise in our times, on the left and the right.
Late last week Ann Coulter was a guest on Ex-Catholic Priest Albert Cutie's TV show (why Fox allowed this to be a part of their network lineup, I don't know)
Ann in her 'in your face' way tries to explain why single motherhood is not the plan of Christ in bringing up children. Now single mothers do their best to raise children because the father for whatever reasons skip out on their duties. Or maybe a death of a husband as Mary had to raise Jesus. We don't know when Joseph was no longer a part of the family (died) but it definitely was not a divorce situation. No scholars support divorce.
God's intent is to have a father and mother raise their children, that is the best way. We should do everything possible to create marriages to be strong and lasting and most importantly mothers and father partners with God.
Now Coulter gets a whacking from the audience who comprise mostly of single mom's and that suits Cutie just fine. Instead of explaining the proper most successful way to raise a family (Note: this clip doesn't show the complete encounter) but he seems to want to blame the fathers (maybe rightfully so) for their abandonment of their families, though with an audience of mom's, he doesn't know the whole story. No way he's going to lecture the mom's... he's out numbered and let's face it, he's got Coulter on the ropes.
So Coulter's message of children from broken families have a disadvantage and many times end up creating broken families of their own or end up in a life of crime. Not all the time but statistics (as Ann tried to point out) show this. Albert Cutie decides to sidestep these facts and goes with the angry crowd.
Single moms have to deal with the circumstances that befall them, but maybe forming a true relationship before getting married will keep a family of father, mother, children and God strong and life lasting.
Is Albert Cutie really helping the single mom's in the audience or viewing on TV? Is he passing on a Godly message?

So here's the encounter... but then look at a real priest (Fr. Barron) with a true message about marriage and relationships.

I heard Reid, Schumer and a few others express their outrage that claimed the Republicans would not negociate.
Ahhhh, excuse me, the Dem's tabled (killed) both plans without any vote, they haven't passed a budget in 800 some day's and now that the have generated this crisis they blame everyone but themselves.
I actually think it's easy to see through their lies, but unbelievably many swallow what they're saying.
What I don't see is the Republicans taking the lead by going in front of the camera and explaining their actions they are letting Reid and Schumer lead the discussion and put out untruths.

NASA satellite data from the years 2000 through 2011 show the Earth's atmosphere is allowing far more heat to be released into space than alarmist computer models have predicted, reports a new study in the peer-reviewed science journal Remote Sensing. The study indicates far less future global warming will occur than United Nations computer models have predicted, and supports prior studies indicating increases in atmospheric carbon dioxide trap far less heat than alarmists have claimed.
If anyone still has any doubt about the utter distaste that many in the media have for the Catholic Church, one does not need to look any further than the "question and answer" session during the press conference in Philadelphia today (Tue. 9/19/11) welcoming the region's new Archbishop Charles Chaput. A woman from the Associated Press stood with a question for the new archbishop. (I am unable to confirm 100%, but I am almost certain the woman was Maryclaire Dale, who submitted this article about the event.) Paraphrasing her words, the AP woman essentially asked, "If you are all about justice and compassion, as you've said in the past, then why did you oppose a proposed law in Colorado lifting the statute of limitations for abuse claims?" (Before arriving as the new archbishop of Philadelphia today, Abp. Chaput was Archbishop of Denver since 1997.)
I'm presently doing some personal research and study on Catholic Social Doctrine.
There's so much out there and you hear so much from fellow Catholics, even one's pastor, and most of all so called Catholics in the political arena that it can be quite difficult to find what's the truth.
Now that our parish has brought in the progressive ICUC/PICO organization into our church, it's a definite wake-up call for me to do some studying to find the truth.
So I'm starting out with this book by a Catholic Professor J. Brian Benestad. I had to do a little research on him as well and he looks pretty knowledgeable and in line with Catholic teaching.

Transhumanism is a insidious philosophy that many people are simply unaware of. It is time to become aware. Transhumanism seeks not just to cure disease but to change the nature of man. To make him more than human with whatever means are available, whether it is with nanotechnology, artificial limbs, artificial intelligence, or genetic enhancement. Transhumanists have societies and magazines and conferences. They even argue that the writings of a Jesuit priest will convince Christians of their cause. It seems like benign science fiction, but transhumansim is far from it. It rejects the nature of humanity the fundamental principles that have governed society for thousands of years. Transhumanists envision a world where man is a master of technology and wields it to his advantage. They do not realize that what they advocate will do the exact opposite. It will make man a slave to the technology he creates.
Gays, lesbians, bisexuals and transgender people would be added to the lengthy list of social and ethnic groups that public schools must include in social studies lessons under a landmark bill passed Thursday by the California Senate.
If the bill is adopted by the state Assembly and signed by Gov. Jerry Brown, California would become the first state to require the teaching of gay history.
Message from Pope Benedict... a warning we must all heed.
Reported by Protect the Pope, the Holy Father has given an address to a synod of an Italian diocese that expands the Holy See’s recent campaign to re-assert Catholic identity among Catholic Development agencies to include Catholic dioceses. I have highlighted some of his words as they struck my ear as having a resonance with his themes of re-enchanting the liturgy and re-evangelising the Western world through emphasising the unique purpose of the Church as a spiritual organism. I was also struck by a resonance with the recent Adoratio Conference whose theme was "From Adoration to Evangelisation". I think it also helps to explain why it is that the young people now exploring a vocation in the Church are seen as too Church focussed and traditional by some of the older generation who have been so dissapointed by the fruits of the "spirit of the Council". Those called to the Priesthood and Religious Life surely are drawn by what is distinctive in the Church, not by what many other social and philanthropic organisations share with it - in other words the love of God in the Church Jesus founded. Relaxing this morning. I'm off from work today so before I head outside to do the yard, I had a chance to have a cup of coffee, the first one in about a month.
I've stopped my regular routine of a couple of cups in the morning. Makes me too jittery so this morning's cup was a treat for me.

Isn't it ironic that I find pretty much everything written at CNN's "Belief blog" unbelievable?
Steven Prothero, a Religion Professor at Boston University, in dealing with the question of possible sainthood for Dorothy Day wonders whether Catholics can abide a saint who's had an abortion.
Of course the answer is that last I checked most of the saints had a few sins. (Saint Augustine call your office) Prothero's question is similar to asking whether sinners can become saints. Duh.
Prothero finally says that Day can become a saint but comes at the answer from an odd perspective. He concludes that abortion's not really a big deal and Dorothy Day can become a saint because polling indicates the public is split over abortion. Because, you know, sainthood is decided by polling. George Washington, Farewell Address Charles Carroll of Carrollton, as he signed his name when he added his signature to the Declaration of Independence, was the only Catholic signer of the Declaration of Independence. When he died at the age of 95, he was the last of the Signers to depart this vale of tears. MORE

For this Fourth of July weekend, a little history lesson. After the signing of the Declaration of Independence, the vast majority of Catholics sided with the revolutionaries, because they considered themselves American, not British. “They understood the genius of America,” wrote the distinguished Catholic historian, Theodore Maynard, “Without hesitation they threw in their lot with Congress.”
Charles Carroll of Carrollton, the only son of Charles Carroll of Annapolis, was born in 1737 and died in November 1832. He was the lone Catholic to sign the Declaration of Independence and the last of the signers to die. Last year I interviewed Dr. Brad Birzer, Assistant Professor of History at Hillsdale College and author of American Cicero: The Life of Charles Carroll (ISI, 2010). Here is some of that interview:
The scepticism of the last two centuries has attacked patriotism as it has attacked all the other theoretic passions of mankind, and in the case of patriotism the attack has been interesting and respectable because it has come from a set of modern writers who are not mere sceptics, but who really have an organic belief in philosophy and politics. Hillary Clinton bragged today about how the U.S. State Department, which she leads as Secretary of State, helped Lady Gaga to join gay pride celebrations in Rome.
Not only is it in Rome but in the Circus Maximus area where Christians were used as human torches and murdered.
And Ms. Clinton takes pride in her departments efforts to make this happen.

An asteroid the size of a tour bus zipped by Earth Monday -- a flyby so close that the space rock was nearer to the planet than some satellites.
The space rock, called asteroid 2011 MD, reached its closest point to Earth just after 1 p.m. EDT (1700 GMT), when it crept within 7,500 miles (12,000 km) of Earth before whipping away again like a slingshot. The asteroid was flying over the southern Atlantic Ocean, off the coast of Antarctica, at the time of its closest approach.

Actually I was not a fan of the old Vatican website and frankly I don't see the improvement in the new one.
I've often gone away from the Vatican website not finding what I want and searching elsewhere.
That's a shame because I know that the information must be there... somewhere. I do want the Vatican website to be a place of frequent visits from Catholics an non-Catholics alike.

This little post about Deepak Chopra isn't going to be as impeccable and memorable as Dr. Ed Peters' post about Maureen Dowd (Note his restraint: "With a predictability that borders on banality". Borders?).
But I confess that I have certain and pointed dislike for the writing and "thought" of Chopra, who I consider to be only about a half-step up from a con artist, although it could be that he has simply taken con artistry to a New (Age) level. His book, The Third Jesus: The Christ We Cannot Ignore, is quite possibly the most embarrassing, confused, illogical, and ignorant "serious" book ever written about Jesus, which is really saying something.
Yesterday, New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd went after Archbishop Dolan’s efforts to protect marriage in New York — and also snuck in a drive-by sniping of my father’s recent comments about (Catholic) New York Governor Andrew Cuomo’s manifest concubinage, just for good measure.
Governor Cuomo is for gay marriage, so you can guess who Dowd is writing to protect and abet in her column (entitled “Gay Sera, Sera“). My father has responded to Ms. Dowd’s feeble attempts to warp his argument here. Now why do I title my post “Vintage Deja Vu Dowd”? Because Maureen Dowd has only one argument against the Catholic Church, or any Catholic figure who speaks in the public square. And every time it’s the same. It goes like this: “Pedophile!” MORE
Ecclesiastes notwithstanding, there is something new under the sun in the annals of American anti-Catholicism; and that something is the rise of the anti-Catholic Catholics, self-described Catholics who make a career (or at least part of a career) out of mounting endless attacks on the Church, its settled beliefs, its leadership, and its people. Like the rest of you I've heard about Father Corapi leaving the priesthood.
Still confused at the news, but more I'm saddened to know that Fr. Corapi would give up the priesthood so readily. I've heard him preach on the Holy Eucharist with passion and conviction.
How could he give that up so easily? An instrument in God's hand in the consecration.
I'm actually ready to move on. The Church is whats important. He will always be know for his fiery preaching of the teachings of the church. He did some good work in the name of the Lord.

We saw this on the [Left] View ABC program when Whoopie and Bayhart walked of stage when an opposing opinion was offered.....they WALKED OFF STAGE.
That was the case on FoxNews when a Frm Clinton Aid entered the debate arean (however brief) to trade views on the Budget proposal of Paul Ryan.
The debate clearly wasn't that hated and in fact it just started when Bill Clinton campaign adviser Simon Rosenberg, decided he had enough and walked off camera, leaving conservative talk-show host Ben Ferguson to continue without him... and pointed out 'that's what you do [walk off] when you don't have answers'.
Shameful....
No wonder nothing is getting done.

I believe Netahyahu is great leader in a very unstable time in the Middle East.
He delivered a very firm message with true grace and allowed president Obama to save face. The Prime Minister could have really let Obama have an ear full in front of the world, be he knows how to be a true meaning of diplomacy.

Are you Pre, Mid, or Post? If you don’t know how to answer that question, you’re probably a Catholic. Most Fundamentalists and Evangelicals know that these words are shorthand for pre-tribulation, mid-tribulation, and post-tribulation. The terms all refer to when the rapture is supposed to occur.

It would become the best-selling nonfiction book of the decade, going through more than 100 printings totaling 35 million copies and making Hal Lindsey a household name. Lindsey continues writing "end-times" prophecy books (close to 20 at last count) and also peddles his teachings through a regular television program, speaking engagements, and Holy Land tours.

It has often been said that you should never meet your heroes because you’ll likely be disappointed. For better or worse, one of mine is a car.
Born five years before me, the 1965 Ford Mustang Shelby GT350 was already a classic by the time I reached the age of automotive awareness. The first real thoroughbred Mustang, its Guardsman Blue stripes over white livery remains iconic today, and pristine originals command prices well into the six-digit range.
That being the case, I’ve resigned myself to the fact that I’ll probably never get the chance to drive one in anger on a racetrack. That opportunity certainly passed a couple of decades ago.

We know not when the end will come, like a thief in the night, scripture tells us.Though I don't believe in the arguments that selected this day.... so I'll be blogging on May 22, God willing.

I'm *not* kidding! Harold Camping--president of the Protestant radio outreach known as Family Radio--has been predicting for some time that the long-awaited Rapture will occur on May 21st of this year. Of course, he's made similar predictions before. He famously got his followers worked up back in 1994 about that being the year the world would end (or something) and, well . . . y'know. No doubt Stephen Hawkins is a brilliant man who is a great example of someone who has over come adversity to become one of the foremost minds in science.
His only fault is not recognizing that it wasn't all under his own power, but the many individuals who help him through his daily needs with their acts of hope, love and charity. These gifts given to them, written on their souls by our divine Father in heaven.
The mind he uses to explore the wonders of the universe also a gift from our Heavenly Father.
All these gifts freely given. So Mr. Hawkins can go on pontificating about Heaven being a fairy story. One day he will know
Meanwhile, I'll continue to pray for him and thank our Father for the many gifts he has given Stephen as well as myself.
British scientist Stephen Hawking has branded heaven a "fairy story" for people afraid of the dark, in his latest dismissal of the concepts underpinning the world's religions.
The author of 1988 international best-seller "A Brief History of Time" said in an interview with The Guardian published on Monday that his views were partly influenced by his battle with motor neurone disease. "I have lived with the prospect of an early death for the last 49 years. I'm not afraid of death, but I'm in no hurry to die. I have so much I want to do first," he told the newspaper. "I regard the brain as a computer which will stop working when its components fail. There is no heaven or afterlife for broken down computers; that is a fairy story for people afraid of the dark." I'm looking forward to reading their post; I hope to find the same faithfulness to the official Catholic teaching and Pope Benedict.

The abortion laws in the United States, as a result of a series of Supreme Court decisions starting with Roe v. Wade and Doe v. Dalton and continuing through the 1980s and 1990s, have become the most permissive in the Western world, allowing abortions even in the third trimester. Most Western European countries, with the exception of Germany and most of the United Kingdom, restrict abortion to the first trimester, with various exceptions for health-related issues, counseling, and sex crimes. The only Western European countries prohibiting abortion are Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, which has come under increasing pressure from the European Union and other advocate groups to change the prevailing law.
Beware of those that claim to follow the teaching of the Catholic Church and are in the company of those the wish it's destruction.
Case in point the recent letter by professors at Catholic University, in an effort to create their own 'Notre Dame' affair (if you remember Obama's commencement speech at ND) with Rep. John Boehner’s planned commencement speech at Catholic University of America.

Because of the significant funding the group has received from Soros, an atheist, CACG has been called a “fake Catholic” group designed to undermine official Catholic teaching on abortion and homosexuality and promote Obama Administration Big Government policies. There is a lot of this going around. Met to confuse the average Catholic, with promises of free this and free that, and take from those the have and redistribute to those that want.
Confusing fellow Catholic on it's official teachings of social justice, these kind of groups abound with support from George Soros and those associated with him.

I think what president Obama is doing is so obvious and frankly quite shameful.
In one breath he can give a speech at a campaign fund raiser asking for planned parenthood support and in another breath quote Holy Scripture to gain the Hispanic vote.
As it is written in the Book of Deuteronomy (10:19), ‘Love ye therefore the stranger: for ye were strangers in the land of Egypt.’ To me, that verse is a call to show empathy to our brothers and our sisters; to try and recognize ourselves in one another.
Hmmmmm... Let's see 'Love ye therefore the stranger', except if you're an innocent baby in the womb.Well that makes a lot of sense.
