Now why doesn't this surprise me that PBS would side with the infamous Bill Maher's statement that the OT is a book of Jewish fairy Tales.
PBS has long supported programing as this Nova series which claims that the entire Exodus story is debunked.

Fire Update: Smoke gets in your eyes
Whew, Sunday was a smokey one. No winds sure helped the fire fighters but the smoke settled between the Mount Baldy mounting range and Anaheim Hills which creates a basin.
Still some hot spots but it looks like it's on it's way to containment.
No school day because of the air quality. My son's school is a Red Cross shelter.

Fire! So Cal
The Fires are still burning this morning. I live in Chino Hills, so the smoke is rather heavy. Diamond Bar is on the other side of the hills from us and they are also in the path of the flames.
The DC9 and other fire fighting aircraft are making their runs, I see them through my kitchen window this morning.
I'm requesting prayers and fasting for all those affected by the fires, here in Chino Hills and Diamond Bar as well as all the other locations in So. Cal

SQPN and Fr. Roderick of the Netherlands is the home of one of my favorite podcasts, 'The Daily Breakfast'.It's also home to several notable podcasts and video podcasts, some of those also among the Podcast Award winners.

Mormon's & Propostion 8
Michael Barber of 'Singing in the Reign' weblog and an associate professor at JP II University, has put together a short video addressing this past election passage of Proposition 8.
Those opposed to this Prop, aimed their anger at the Mormon Church and blamed them for the successful campaigning and ultimately it's passage.
They continue to spew hateful accusations claiming that the IRS should investigate the church.
I personally applaud the Mormon church and everyone involved with supporting Prop 8. Including the Catholic Church and fellow Catholics which I credit with helping to put the votes over the top.
With our combined efforts we showed those that would change the definition of marriage that the majority will defend a marriage between a man and woman.

1/2 of Bishops MAY have voted for Obama...
The Curt Jester has the skinny on this. Evidently Laura Ingraham and Raymond Arroyo of EWTN discussed this.

Stealing Communion... another case
Looks like another case of Communion stealing...
The Martin County Sheriff's Office says 33-year-old John Samuel Ricci of Canton was cornered by fellow churchgoers when he grabbed a handful of wafers from the priest during communion services Saturday.
The Stuart News reports that Ricci was being held down by six or seven offended parishioners when deputies arrived at St. Martin de Porres Catholic Church in Jensen Beach. Police say two parishioners, ages 82 and 61, received minor injuries in the scuffle.

Only four years ago, the media were abuzz with the revelation that a fissure ran through America, dividing us into Republican red states and Democratic blue states, polarity as much cultural as political. Red states are NASCAR and barbecue, while blue states are NPR and brie. Red states are overweight and vulgar and gas-guzzling, while blue states are trim and green and cool in a European sort of way. Tell me what radio station you listen to, what kind of beer you drink, where you spent vacation—and I can tell you what party you voted for.
The red–blue divide has never been as sharp as the electoral maps make it seem, and the red–blue analysis obscures the more fundamental division in American political life. Since the mid-1970s, the “culture wars” have defined the alignments of American politics, and the alignments of the culture wars are largely religious.
The 1963 school-prayer and Bible-reading decision, Murray v. Curlett, startled some believers into activism, but it was not until Roe v. Wade that evangelicals awakened from their Pietist slumbers and launched a crusade to win back America. Once energized, evangelicals were not content to remain narrowly anti-abortion, but sought to promote religiously grounded positions on everything from Star Wars to stem cells. The culture wars are the result of the invasion of conservative religion—mostly Christianity—into public life.
Not everyone sees things this way. Despite his post at the Boisi Center for Religion and American Public Life, Alan Wolfe has nothing to say about religion in his post-election analysis of Obama’s achievement in ending the culture wars. That’s because Wolfe doesn’t think the culture wars were really about religion in the first place. The culture wars, it turns out, were racial conflicts in disguise.

Cardinal George: Racism & Anti-Catholicism
Cardinal George, in an address Nov 10th notes that the American society is making head-way against racism, but that anti-Catholicism is a deeper challenge.

Merry Christmas... Atheist Style
Well the holidays are closing in.
Thanksgiving is just around the corner with Christmas a skip (..I wonder if kids still know how to skip?) away from that.
The ornaments and advertisements will be hitting the local stores and T.V. commercials and holiday billboards will be ringing in the festivities.
Manger scenes will be going up... where approved.
But wait...!
... but what do my wondering eyes should appear.. is it Santa, is it baby Jesus with a star shining over the manger scene in front of a church?
No. It's the new advertisement signs being put up around town this year, sponsored by The American Humanist Association.

Ads proclaiming, "Why believe in a god? Just be good for goodness' sake," will appear on Washington, D.C., buses starting next week and running through December. The American Humanist Association unveiled the provocative $40,000 holiday ad campaign Tuesday.
In lifting lyrics from "Santa Claus is Coming to Town," the Washington-based group is wading into what has become a perennial debate over commercialism, religion in the public square and the meaning of Christmas.
"We are trying to reach our audience, and sometimes in order to reach an audience, everybody has to hear you," said Fred Edwords, spokesman for the humanist group. "Our reason for doing it during the holidays is there are an awful lot of agnostics, atheists and other types of non-theists who feel a little alone during the holidays because of its association with traditional religion."

On this Veterans Day, when America reveres those who have served in the military, retired Gen. Norman Schwarzkopf provides a glimpse into the source of the courage that inspires such service: “Confidence with character — that’s what you must have,” says the Army commander who led the way to victory in the 1991 Gulf War concludes.
Veterans Day is parades, the Tomb of the Unknowns, a flag-draped Main Street, children and old men with hands over their hearts, but a lot of the celebration is words – great words describing great courage and paying homage to present and past warriors, and sometimes even future military heroes.
When Schwarzkopf was fresh back from the Gulf War triumph, he was asked to speak to the cadet corps at West Point, his alma mater.
The hero whose demeanor earned him the label “Stormin’ Norman” was brimming with pride in the caliber of America’s armed forces when he boomed forth to the ranks of the young men and women of the United States Military Academy: “It takes a war to demonstrate that we have these people in our ranks — and our ranks are loaded with them. They are loaded with them, and you are going to be one of them when you join our ranks. And if there is any doubt in anybody’s mind or was any doubt in anybody’s mind, there sure in hell isn’t any doubt now — because it has taken us 100 hours to kick the ass of the fourth-largest army in the world!”
Schwarzkopf had the young cadets in the palm of his hand by the time he his final points reverberated across the assembly: “If you leave here with the word DUTY implanted in your mind; if you leave here with the word HONOR carved in your soul; if you leave here with love of COUNTRY stamped on your heart, then you will be a 21st-century leader worthy of the great privilege and honor of leading the sons and daughters of America . . .”

Schwarzenegger: "Get to da Chopper!"
Don't look now but it seems like the Terminator Gov. Schwarzenegger is throwing his weight behind the continued sour grapes of the Proposition 8 NO voters.
There has been continued unrest in Los Angeles and San Francisco notably since the YES vote was upheld.
Gov. Schwarzenegger is hoping that the courts will over turn this once again and squish the peoples voice.
Gov. Schwarzenegger, you are an embarrassment. The voters have spoken, why would you want to have the courts over tune the people?
I hope everyone who voted YES (and that's a majority) will remember the Governors words when it's time to vote him in or OUT.

Arnold Schwarzenegger on Sunday expressed hope that the California Supreme Court would overturn Proposition 8, the ballot initiative that outlawed same-sex marriage. He also predicted that the 18,000 gay and lesbian couples who have already wed would not see their marriages nullified by the initiative.
"It's unfortunate, obviously, but it's not the end," Schwarzenegger said in an interview Sunday on CNN. "I think that we will again maybe undo that, if the court is willing to do that, and then move forward from there and again lead in that area."

Obama Executive Orders may reverse Stem Cell Research Ban
There is some speculation that President Bush's Stem Cell research ban will be immediately over turned with President-Elect Obama's first days in office via Executive Order.
I'm calling this Obama's version of 'Shock-and-Awe'. Actually more like 'Shock-and-OH-NO'!
Seems like Mr. Obama will be utilizing this presidential privilege rather forcefully to undo policies implemented by the Bush administration, in a "big-bang" affect.
President-elect Obama plans to use his executive powers to make an immediate impact when he takes office, perhaps reversing Bush administration policies on stem cell research and domestic drilling for oil and natural gas.
John Podesta, Obama's transition chief, said Sunday Obama is reviewing President Bush's executive orders on those issues and others as he works to undo policies enacted during eight years of Republican rule. He said the president can use such orders to move quickly on his own.
"There's a lot that the president can do using his executive authority without waiting for congressional action, and I think we'll see the president do that," Podesta said. "I think that he feels like he has a real mandate for change. We need to get off the course that the Bush administration has set."

Kathleen Sebelius (catholic) to lead FOCA passage
AmP reports that... well.. that Rocco reports... that that extreme pro-abortion advocate (and Catholic) Kathleen Sebelius, governor of Kansas (previous AmP mentions here) ... is being considered to lead the Department of Health and Human Services, which oversees such things as abortion, and who would be tasked with shepherding FOCA through Congress.

Kmiec also displays an incredible presumption whenever he claims to be more concerned about the lives of America's unborn than our very own bishops. (I mean - really? - what do they have to gain? Not much. What do you have to gain? Well, apparently something you find very worth it.)
Archbishop Chaput charitably responds to Doug Kmiec's open letter to him, corrects Kmiec's claim that they are friends ("[we] have had little contact in the past"), notes that there are "serious falsehoods and misdirections in Prof. Kmiec's ''prolife'' advocacy for Sen. Obama" and concludes by saying "I look forward eagerly to Prof. Kmiec's vocal advocacy against these profoundly unjust policies" in the future Obama administration.

Decompressing Post Elections
I'm still trying to decompress after the elections.
Thought I'd stay away from all the news for a few days. That's aways a good thing.
Okay, so the Obama festivities are on going. The drapes have been measured The 'storm troopers' of the new administration are being assembled and the MSM is still getting tingles up there legs.
Time to roll up our sleeve and get to work.
Pro-life is still the battle cry and believe me there is some noise out there, in regards to FOCA, that are going to rely on our efforts even more.
Don't just sit back in despair, as scripture tells us:
Ephesians 6:13-20
Therefore, take unto you the armour of God, that you may be able to resist in the evil day and to stand in all things perfect. 14 Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth and having on the breastplate of justice: 15 And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace. 16 In all things taking the shield of faith, wherewith you may be able to extinguish all the fiery darts of the most wicked one. 17 And take unto you the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit (which is the word of God). 18 By all prayer and supplication praying at all times in the spirit: and in the same watching with all instance and supplication for all the saints: 19 And for me, that speech may be given me, that I may open my mouth with confidence, to make known the mystery of the gospel, 20 For which I am an ambassador in a chain: so that therein I may be bold to speak according as I ought.

California Proposition 8: Still In a Battle
The Battle of the Propositions had some surprising results from Nov. 4th.
Californians voted in a bullet train.
.... we don't need a bullet train much less can we pay for one... but it was voted in anyway.
Proposition 4 was defeated. Once again parents are left out of parenting.
The one Proposition that still seems to be in a battle, despite it's very successful passage is Prop. 8, No Gay Marriage.
My daughter, a resent college grad., has noticed in her group of college friends that the passage of this proposition has many still in heated debates. In fact rather hostile words and 'in your face' exchanges. Accusations of "intolerance" even "racist"are being leveled.
This is perplexing because I never considered those with a self proclaimed Gay life style a Race.
Hmmm?
But the point is, this reaction to the elections and specifically Prop 8 in California is still being fought. San Francisco and Los Angeles, where I live are reporting preparations of legal challenges to overturn this measure.
This measure, under another ballot was once before overturned by the courts, despite a majority of voters up holding a marriage between a man and a woman.
No doubt the wheels are turning to do the same again.

My daughter, a resent college grad., has noticed in her group of college friends that the passage of this proposition has many still in heated debates. In fact rather hostile words and 'in your face' exchanges. Accusations of "intolerance" even "racist"are being leveled.
This is perplexing because I never considered those with a self proclaimed Gay life style a Race.
Hmmm?
But the point is, this reaction to the elections and specifically Prop 8 in California is still being fought. San Francisco and Los Angeles, where I live are reporting preparations of legal challenges to overturn this measure.
This measure, under another ballot was once before overturned by the courts, despite a majority of voters up holding a marriage between a man and a woman.
No doubt the wheels are turning to do the same again.

My 'YES on PROP 8' sign disappeared from my house as well as my from my neighbor's yard sometime yesterday.
Friends in the work place are a little more cautious but still very verbal.

Winner: MONEY
Mr. Obama will be the next President of the United States.
It looks like more people looked at their wallets and pocketbooks and felt that was a more important agenda. Money issues became the focus instead of Life issues.
The life of the unborn continues on it's deadly path.
[My thoughts below]
The concern of money is an important one in the functioning of a society. The transfer of goods and services through hard work and labor has always been the strong point in the American society. Work hard and one will achieve ones goals.
America has always been attractive to the world for this reason. "The land of opportunity" is one such saying to describe this God blessed nation.
However, with the election of Mr. Obama to the presidency (in my opinion) this 'work hard, achieve your goals' idea has taken a back seat to the new American idea of 'what can my government give to me today' mentality.
It use to be that if a man comes to you hungry and asks for food, you would feed him and teach him how to fish so that he could continue to feed himself and teach others to fish.
Now it seems that those that know how to fish will continue to fish for the masses, while the masses continue to feed. No fishing is required.
I think the reality of this false thinking will eventually be shown to be the society destroyer that it really is... eventually.
In the mean time, we have to continue to be faithful to the teachings of Jesus Christ in his church. We must continue to rely on His Providence and remain active in the political arena to ensure the moral voice is heard.
The fight for LIFE is still our main agenda, no matter what set backs may appear to be on the horizon. The 4,000 daily deaths of the unborn is still very much unacceptable.
Continue to be the light in the world that Christ intended us to be and yes, pray for our new president and his administration.

Get Out And VOTE!
E-Day folks.
What can be said has been said and now it's time to VOTE !
Join me in a little prayer and fasting today. This blessed nation of America is in the hands of the voters.
With God's grace and guidance it will be a peaceful election day... and we need everyone's prayers that we the people will cooperate with that guidance.
Ignore the polls and if you can limit your election coverage to limit your stress.
So go out and vote your Informed Catholic Conscience.

Obama: The Disarming of the Military of America
Anyone who is naive enough to thing this world would be at peace, only if America would disarm itself is crazy...
This world is full of bad guys that wouldn't hesitate to bring the USA to it's knees and submit to their agenda of world dominance under their rules, given a disarmed America.
To believe that if 'we just leave the bad guys alone, they will leave us alone' is a very fatal mentality.
Barney Frank just this week said, not hinted, the the agenda he and the rest of a majority Democratic party House and Senate, should reduce the military by 25%.
He is hopeful that by taking that money away from the military, the thought is to transfer that money's to the billions of dollars needed toward the proposals Mr. Obama has set forth.
Those that work in aerospace prepare for MASSIVE LAYOFFS, next year.
Maybe those laid off (engineers, assembly workers, scientist ect..) will find work on the new proposed infrastructure jobs the Obama's party have in store of us. Building road, repairing bridges, filling pot holes (new stimulus package).
This is no answer for building up the economy...

Obama: Civilian Security Force - Gestapo
This is really, really scary folks, a "what the Fudge!" moment.
I read this and asked myself "how can people be so blind"?
I'm researching this now but I'll just put it out there for others to look into it as well.

"Loving your country shouldn't just mean watching fireworks on the 4th of July," he said. "Loving your country must mean accepting your responsibility to do your part to change it. If you do, your life will be richer, our country will be stronger."...
"We cannot continue to rely only on our military in order to achieve the national security objectives that we've set," he said Wednesday. "We've got to have a civilian national security force that's just as powerful, just as strong, just as well funded."
Something so ambitious needs a catchy name, dontcha think? How about say ... Gestapo ... or .... Stasi .... or Committee for State Security (roughly translated Комитет государственной безопасности?) or something catchy ike that?
All joking aside, did you get that folks? Obama wants a federally controlled domestic police force funded the same as the military. Oh my ... Is it any wonder that gun sales are up in Florida?

Why do the masses hate Bush so much? To hear Obama talk you think President Bush was Satan and McCain his brother.
Before you swallow that rhetoric from someone who has no experience, maybe we need to remind ourselves of the blessings preserved by the man that holds the office of the President today.
Mr. Obama, you should thank Mr. Bush for allowing you the time you needed to practice your social activism and polish your speech delivery. You worked hard to get where you are now, but you didn't do it without the help of President Bush these past eight years, whether you want to admit it or not.
There are many out there that need to be reminded as well...

The Newsweek poll alleges that 67 percent of Americans are unhappy with the direction the country is headed and 69 percent of the country is unhappy with the performance of the president. In essence 2/3s of the citizenryjust ain't happy and want a change.
So being the knuckle dragger I am, I started thinking, ''What we are sounhappy about?''
Is it that we have electricity and running water 24 hours a day,7 days a week? Is our unhappiness the result of having air conditioning inthe summer and heating in the winter? Could it be that 95.4 percent ofthese unhappy folks have a job? Maybe it is the ability to walk into a grocery store at any time and see more food in moments than Darfur has seen in the last year?
Maybe it is the ability to drive from the Pacific Ocean to the AtlanticOcean without having to present identification papers as we move througheach state? Or possibly the hundreds of clean and safe motels we wouldfind along the way that can provide temporary shelter? I guess havingthousands of restaurants with varying cuisine from around the world is justnot good enough. Or could it be that when we wreck our car, emergencyworkers show up and provide services to help all and even send a helicopterto take you to the hospital.
Perhaps you are one of the 70 percent of Americans who own a home. You maybe upset with knowing that in the unfortunate case of a fire, a group oftrained firefighters will appear in moments and use top notch equipment to extinguish the flames thus saving you, your family and your belongings. Orif, while at home watching one of your many flat screen TVs, a burglar orprowler intrudes , an officer equipped with a gun and a bullet-proof vestwill come to defend you and your family against attack or loss. This all inthe backdrop of a neighborhood free of bombs or militias raping andpillaging the residents. Neighborhoods where 90 percent of teenagers owncell phones and computers.
How about the complete religious, social and political freedoms we enjoy that are the envy of everyone in the world? Maybe that is what has 67percent of you folks unhappy.
Fact is, we are the largest group of ungrateful, spoiled brats the world has ever seen. No wonder the world loves the U.S. , yet has a great disdain for its citizens. They see us for what we are. The most blessed people inthe world who do nothing but complain about what we don't have , and what we hate about the country instead of thanking the good Lord we live here.
I know, I know. What about the president who took us into war and has no plan to get us out? The president who has a measly 31 percent approval rating? Is this the same president who guided the nation in the dark daysafter 9/11? The president that cut taxes to bring an economy out of recession? Could this be the same guy who has been called every name in the book for succeeding in keeping all the spoiled ungrateful brats safe from terrorist attacks?
The commander in chief of an all-volunteer army that is out there defending you and me? Did you hear how bad the President is on the news or talk show?Did this news affect you so much, make you so unhappy you couldn't take alook around for yourself and see all the good things and be glad?
Think about it...... are you upset at the President because he actually caused you personal pain OR is it because the "Media" told you he was failing to kiss your sorry ungrateful behind every day.
Make no mistake about it. The troops in Iraq and Afghanistan have volunteered to serve, and in many cases may have died for your freedom. There is currently no draft in this country. They didn't have to go.
They are able to refuse to go and end up with either a ''general'' discharge, an ''other than honorable'' discharge or, worst case scenario, a''dishonorable'' discharge after a few days in the brig.
So why then the flat-out discontentment in the minds of 69 percent ofAmericans? Say what you want but I blame it on the media. If it bleeds itleads and they specialize in bad news. Everybody will watch a car crashwith blood and guts. How many will watch kids selling lemonade at the corner? The media knows this and media outlets are for-profit corporations.They offer what sells , and when criticized, try to defend their actions by"justifying" them in one way or another. Just ask why they tried to allow a murderer like O.J. Simpson to write a book about how he didn't kill his wife, but if he did he would have done it this way......Insane!
Stop buying the negativism you are fed everyday by the media. Shut off theTV, burn Newsweek, and use the New York Times for the bottom of your birdcage. Then start being grateful for all we have as a country. There isexponentially more good than bad.
We are among the most blessed people on Earth and should thank God several times a day, or at least be thankful and appreciative."

I often talk about the Freedom of Choice Act (FOCA), and how revealing it is that Obama has promised to sign it into law as "the first thing" he'd do as President. Fr. Thomas Berg explains FOCA:
Sponsored by Senator Barbara Boxer (D-Ca) in the Senate (S. 1173), and Representative Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) in the House (HR 1964), FOCA is a piece of legislation designed “to prohibit, consistent with Roe v. Have you any doubt that it is a human being?
If you do not have any such doubt, have you any doubt that it is an innocent human being?
If you have no doubt about this either, have you any doubt that the authorities in a civilized society are duty-bound to protect this innocent human being if anyone were to wish to kill it?
If your answer to this last query is negative, that is, if you have no doubt that the authorities in a civilized society would be duty-bound to protect this innocent human being if someone were to wish to kill it, I would suggest—even insist—that there is not a lot more to be said about the issue of abortion in our society. It is wrong, and it cannot—must not—be tolerated.
The sad part is there are those that can look at this picture and just walk away...

It seems that Catholics are taking a more 'informed conscience' look at the senator from Chicago.
Who is best to represent our Catholic values: Senator McCain leads Senator Obama among Catholic voters 48% to 39%.
Frankly, I don't know why there's even 39% for the senator from Chicago.

A Huge Switch Among Catholics Toward McCain
The most accurate poll from the 2004 presidential election, the Investors Business Daily (IDB) poll, shows a phenomenal 20 point switch towards Senator McCain among Catholic voters . In the previous IDB tracking poll Senator Obama once held a commanding 11 point advantage among Catholic voters. In the latest tracking poll Senator McCain now has a nine (9) point lead among Catholic voters over Senator Obama. Senator McCain leads Senator Obama among Catholic voters 48% to 39%.
Speculation may be that the economic crisis has dissipated from the front pages as well as the Joe the Plumber drama that unveiled the redistributive policy of Senator Obama to America. But what I believe is the most influential aspect emanating from this interesting poll is that the recent spate of bishops coming out to in defense of the sanctity of life. Prelates such as Archbishop Chaput and Bishop Joseph Martino entering the national political arena and emphasizing that Catholics need to defend each person in all stages of life in addition to giving a correct interpretation of the USCCB’s Faithful Citizenship document. This may be the untold story of the election cycle thus far, Catholics understanding that the value of life trumpets all other issues.

Apprarently, the rev. Barry Lynn (just what church he governes from I don't know) has found it offensive language in Bishop Arthur J. Serratelli homily.
The bishop wrote a column and centered it on abortion which made Mr. Lynn squirm in his seat.
... so what did he do?
"Hello, IRS? I'd like to report a Separation of Church and State violation."
It's more like a TRUTH violation. We Catholics are not allowed to address abortions issues during an election year.
Maybe if this were written and delivered by Rev. Wright at his Trinity church, it would have been okay.

Barack Obama’s support for pro-abortion legislation has prompted the activist group Americans United for Separation of Church and State to request an Internal Revenue Service investigation. The group alleges that Bishop Arthur J. Serratelli violated regulations forbidding tax-exempt organizations from tying political issues to the candidates who support them.
In Bishop Serratelli’s October 23rd column, titled “A Politician’s Promise: No Right to Life! No Freedom!”, he examined the status of abortion law in America today, noting that most Americans now favor “some kind of a ban on abortion” and that the number of abortions is in decline.
“There is truly a deep sensitivity to life in the soul of America,” he continued, claiming the proposed Freedom of Choice Act (FOCA) would “mortally wound this sensitivity.”
According to the bishop, the proposed federal FOCA bill would remove the rights of medical personnel and hospitals which have moral objections to performing abortions.
“Gone the freedom of conscience so essential for a civil society!” Bishop Serratelli predicted.

New Book: The Man Who Invented Christmas
Not a true statement in itself, however the subject matter of the book is rather interesting.
It's about Charles Dicken's of 'A Christmas Carol' fame.
...a few words on the book by the author Les Standiford:
Time to say a few words about my new book, The Man Who Invented Christmas: How Charles Dickens's A Christmas Carol Rescued His Career and Revived Our Holiday Spirits. The publication date is November 4, which hopefully gives everyone plenty of time to pick up copies for every reader on your holiday list. The title pretty much says it all, but I should add that much of what is in this book came as a real surprise to me--yet one more instance of how all this recent work in history has been making up for those days I dozed through class in high school and college. I had always assumed that Charles Dickens had it pretty easy once he became established as the best-selling author of his time, but that is not the case. By 1843, he was broke, his critical reputation was shot, and his once-fabled popularity was at an all time low. By chance, he came up with a story that he believed would turn his fortunes around. But the fact is that A Christmas Carol, the most popular Christmas story of all time, very nearly did not happen. When he went excitedly to his publishers to pitch his story, Messrs Chapman and Hall listened patiently, then suggested he lie down until the urge to tell "a ghost story of Christmas" had passed. Angry but undeterred, Dickens resolved to publish the tale himself, even though he had only six weeks to finish writing it, have it designed, illustrated and printed, and copies delivered to the shelves. But he managed, and the story of how this self-published book became at one time second only to the Bible in readership gripped me like Jacob Marley fastening on Scrooge. There is much in here about how this book came to shape Christmas as we know it today; but it is also very much about writing, and the publishing industry, and personal courange and conviction...I hope you will enjoy reading the book as much as I enjoyed writing it. Abolishing 401(k) Tax Breaks
Yikes, my 401(k) is in bloody mess nowadays as is most everyone else. However, this article is not going to stop the bleeding at all. In fact it may kill most 401(k) account altogether.
House Democrats Contemplate Abolishing 401(k) Tax Breaks.
Powerful House Democrats are eyeing proposals to overhaul the nation’s $3 trillion 401(k) system, including the elimination of most of the $80 billion in annual tax breaks that 401(k) investors receive.
House Education and Labor Committee Chairman George Miller, D-California, and Rep. Jim McDermott, D-Washington, chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee’s Subcommittee on Income Security and Family Support, are looking at redirecting those tax breaks to a new system of guaranteed retirement accounts to which all workers would be obliged to contribute.
A plan by Teresa Ghilarducci, professor of economic-policy analysis at the New School for Social Research in New York, contains elements that are being considered. She testified last week before Miller’s Education and Labor Committee on her proposal.
At that hearing, the director of the Congressional Budget Office, Peter Orszag, testified that some $2 trillion in retirement savings has been lost over the past 15 months.
Under Ghilarducci’s plan, all workers would receive a $600 annual inflation-adjusted subsidy from the U.S. government but would be required to invest 5 percent of their pay into a guaranteed retirement account administered by the Social Security Administration. The money in turn would be invested in special government bonds that would pay 3 percent a year, adjusted for inflation.
The current system of providing tax breaks on 401(k) contributions and earnings would be eliminated.

Democratic vice-presidential presidential candidate Joe Biden declared last year, “One of my avocations is theology.”
But as with the issue of abortion, the Catholic politician is earning failing grades regarding his comprehension of Church teachings about the nature of marriage.
Appearing Oct. 20 on lesbian comedienne Ellen DeGeneres’s talk show, Biden said “that if I lived in California, I would vote against Proposition 8.”
The Catholic League concisely summed up how Biden’s opposition to Proposition 8 — which would amend the California state constitution to define marriage as only between one man and one woman — contradicts the basic responsibilities of a Catholic politician.
“Proposition 8 is a civil initiative that would secure marriage as an institution that is exclusively between a man and a woman, and Joe Biden told Ellen DeGeneres that he is opposed to that measure,” Catholic League president Bill Donohue said in an Oct. 20 press release. “In other words, Biden did not tell the truth in his debate with Sarah Palin. He cannot logically be opposed to both gay marriage and Proposition 8, but that is exactly what he is trying to get away with. More important, Biden is openly defying both the pope and the bishops.

Some argue that we should not focus on policies that provide help for pregnant women, but just focus on the essential task of establishing legal protections for children in the womb. Others argue that providing lifeaffirming support for pregnant women should be our only focus and this should take the place of efforts to establish legal protections for unborn children. We want to be clear that neither argument is consistent with Catholic teaching. Our faith requires us to oppose abortion on demand and to provide help to mothers facing challenging pregnancies.

They say we should accept Roe as a permanent fixture of constitutional law, stop trying to restore recognition for the unborn child’s human rights, and confine our public advocacy to efforts to “reduce abortions” through improved economic and social support for women and families.

Pharisees & Herodians
Latest weeks Sunday readings told of the attemped entrapment of Jesus by the Pharisees and the Herodians.
I thought about this reading as it relates to today's abortion issue. I'd plan on posting on it but Father Chas Canoy of St. Thomas the Apostle Parish in Ann Arbor, Michiagan beat me to the punch.
He does a better job than I could ever do:
“Render Unto Caesar”
Today’s Gospel that touches on the nature of civic responsibility is a fitting one as our country heads into voting booths in a couple of weeks. To understand the Gospel better we have to know a little bit about the groups involved. It begins with a group of Pharisees teaming up with a group of Herodians. These two groups do not like each other, they have opposite political views. It’s like a group of Democrats and Republicans teaming up to take out a third threat so that they can go back to the business of fighting for power between themselves. I guess the people in power back then didn’t like third parties either.
So, these two groups were trying to trap Jesus. They try to force him to take sides, so as to justify one of the groups taking action against him.. The Herodians favored Roman rule, and the Pharisees wanted independence. So they asked him, “Is it lawful to pay the census tax to Caesar or not?” If Jesus went against the tax, the Herodians would go after him on the basis of treason since the words might instigate a revolt on the tax the Jews were charged. But if Jesus spoke in favor of the tax, then the Pharisees would make him out to be a disloyal son of [Israel], favoring Roman tyranny over national independence. So what should Jesus do? First of all, he calls them out, letting them know that he knows what they are up to; “Why are you testing me, you hypocrites?” But then he actually takes them up on the question and asks for a Roman coin. He asks them whose image in on the coin, and they answer, “Caesar’s.” And so Jesus cleverly responds, “ ‘Then render unto Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God,’ When they heard it they marveled, and they left him and went away.” So Jesus evades their trap.

Now if only every American who rely on their freedom through the actions of these brave young men and women in uniform, would see the wisdom of our military war fighters.
Our Soldiers on the ground know when they see in a true leader. They know who they want as Commander In Chief if they are going to be sent off to war.

Weigel - Kmiec Exchange on "Catholics for Obama"
AP has the post on the exchange between professor Douglas Kmiec and theologian George Weigel.
No contest in my opinion, I totally agree with Mr. Weigel. It's important to read both views only to recognize the the importance of the debate.
There is more and more confusion among Catholics today and there shouldn't be.
Catholic Teaching is clear abortion is an intrinsic evil. To support it formally or informally seems to be where the battlelines are being drawn.
The hope is that Obama's administration (if elected) will bring about less abortions. That's a big if in my book. Plus even if Obama's promises on health care, taxes, war do come true, he will still support pro-abortion laws.
Mr. Weigel points out these flaws quoting Archbishop Chaput's that Obama is the 'most pro-abortion candidated in over 35 years' (for exact wording please see privious post on Chaput).
Douglas Kmiec teams up with Nicholas Cafardi (Board of Trustee for University of Steubenville), M. Cathleen Kaveny (Senior Research Fellow and professor at University of Notre Dame), all professors of law and/or theology.

Obama 'Something New Here': (DSA) Democratic Socialist American Party
Bailouts, Handouts, come one come all. Wealth re-distribution and the middle class squeeze.
It will be the middle class who will have to pay for this all. The numbers just don't add up.
The 5% rich who Obama says will pay for all this and more of his spending, don't pay taxes now, and the 40% who don't pay taxes, because of their income, well, they don't pay taxes either.
The middle class will be the mule for this burden. Don't kid yourselves.
I'm not willing to give up just yet... actually NOT EVER!
Let's fight the good-fight together.

During his first campaign for the Illinois state senate in 1995-96, Barack Obama was a member of, and was endorsed by, the far-left New Party. Obama's New Party ties give the lie to his claim to be a post-partisan, post-ideological pragmatist. Particularly in Chicago, the New Party functioned as the electoral arm of the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN). So despite repeated attempts to distance himself from ACORN, Obama's New Party ties raise disturbing questions about his links to those proudly militant leftists. The media's near-total silence on this critical element of Obama's past is deeply irresponsible.
