Obama and the Alternative Magisterium
Nearly a year has passed since Pope Benedict XVI's visit to the United States and his speech to more than 200 leaders of Catholic colleges and universities at the Catholic University of America. Much has happened, both on campus and off.
There is the historic election of Barack Obama, a politician described by Archbishop Charles J. Chaput as "the most committed abortion rights presidential candidate of either party since the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision." His election can be viewed in the context of that papal visit, for many Catholic college professors and administrators helped make his victory possible.

Military Coup or Defense of Democracy?
The Honduras turmoil is slowly rising. Hugo Chavez has vowed to invade if the exiled president Zelaya isn't allowed to return.
President Obama and Secretary of State Clinton, have both condemned the events.
Do we really know what's happening down there? Is our administration really on the right side of this issue. Doesn't America stand for democracy and it's defense?

Saving Democracy in the Honduran 'Coup'
What is being billed as the "first military coup in Central America since the Cold War" occurred early Sunday morning, June 28. The president of Honduras, Jose Manuel Zelaya, was arrested at his residence by members of the Honduran army. His arrest came only hours before he planned to hold an unofficial vote to determine support for his desire to change Honduran law and run for re-election. Per his request, he was flown to Costa Rica where he had asked for asylum.
At first glance this event seems to be another instance of long term democracy's peril in Central America. After all, Central and South America have seen more coups in post-colonial history than a large flock of doves released at a wedding.
Condemnation of President Zelaya's arrest and exile was swift; President Obama said he was "deeply concerned" and leaders of the European Union, along with Secretary of State Clinton, have condemned the military's actions. Hugo Chavez, president of Venezuela and close friend of the leftist Zelaya, has vowed to overthrow whatever successor is chosen to serve the remainder of Zelaya's term.
I am not convinced that the military committed a coup d'etat, per se. With such widespread reaction abroad, what was the reaction from the other branches of the Honduran government?

The Bones of St. Paul
Amazing. The remains found at the tomb of St. Paul may be the soon verified to be the real bone fragments of Paul himself. Carbon-14 testing will be conducted.

VATICAN CITY, JUNE 28, 2009 (Zenit.org).- The tomb of St. Paul may indeed contain the remains of the Apostle of the Gentiles, Benedict XVI affirmed in his homily at the closing of the Year of St. Paul.
The Pope presided at first vespers this evening for the solemnity of Sts. Peter and Paul, which marked the conclusion of the Pauline Year. The celebration took place at the Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls, where it has traditionally been believed St. Paul was buried.
"An authentic scientific analysis" conducted on the sarcophagus conserved in the basilica, the Holy Father said, "seems to confirm the unanimous and uncontested tradition that these are the mortal remains of the Apostle Paul."
"A tiny hole was drilled into the sarcophagus -- which over many centuries had never been opened -- in order to insert a special probe, which revealed traces of costly purple colored linen fabric, laminated with pure gold and a blue fabric with linen filaments," Benedict XVI explained.
"Grains of red incense and protein and chalk substances were also discovered," he continued. "There were also tiny bone fragments, which were sent for carbon-14 testing by experts who were unaware of their origin. These were discovered to belong to a person who had lived between the first and second centuries."

Honduras Democracy
It's not hard to find out who's on the wrong side and who's on the right side. Who's on the side of democracy and who is trying to defeat it if one just does a little research.
In the case of Honduras, where their president is in exile in Costa Rica, it would appear on the outside that this is just another military coup against the people and an attempt to defeat democracy, but the exact opposite it true.
The backers of the exile president are, let see, Fidel Castro, Daniel Ortega, Hugo Chavez, and oh yes our very own Hillary Clinton.
It appears the Mr Zelaya (exiled president) was trying to make a change to the country's constitution without legal process. The courts and the legislation smelled a rat and declared that process illegal. Mr. Zelaya proceeded anyway with his dictatorship plans with a little help from his friend Hugo Chavez and the courts and the legislators call him on it. They ordered the military in to help out.
Our own state department is siding with Fidel and Hugo. Something is a miss here.

Hugo Chávez's coalition-building efforts suffered a setback yesterday when the Honduran military sent its president packing for abusing the nation's constitution.
It seems that President Mel Zelaya miscalculated when he tried to emulate the success of his good friend Hugo in reshaping the Honduran Constitution to his liking.
But Honduras is not out of the Venezuelan woods yet. Yesterday the Central American country was being pressured to restore the authoritarian Mr. Zelaya by the likes of Fidel Castro, Daniel Ortega, Hillary Clinton and, of course, Hugo himself. The Organization of American States, having ignored Mr. Zelaya's abuses, also wants him back in power. It will be a miracle if Honduran patriots can hold their ground.

L.A. Blues - Ed, Farah & Michael
A very sad week in Los Angeles. first Ed McMahon earlier this week and then today both Farah Fawcett and Michael Jackson went home to our Lord.
Lot's of TV and radio coverage. I work around the LAX vicinity so I'm just down the freeway from the UCLA Med Center. Hearing about Michael just after lunch was very strange and sad.

Novice President - Strong or Weak?
5 months is not a very long time to judge the President on merits of his administration. But this is not a 'Learn on the Job' position.
This is the most powerful position an individual can hold, leader of the most powerful nation and leader of the free world.
Much has happened in these 5 months. A mountain of legislation has been proposed and an even bigger mountain of money has been spent. I'm not sure how much more time we can afford to give our novice president the benefit of the the doubt.
We are definitely stuck with the four year term, but at our spending pace I'm a little ... all right, down right scared out of my pants of what this nation and, well, my family's financial status will be at the end of those four years. I'm sure I'm not the only one who has the 'two-o'clock in the morning meetings' with our thoughts.
I don't think we should just sit back and hope for the best. We need to be pro-active. By that I mean in a 'legal, responsible and law abiding way'.
First with our vote. We can't afford to vote on some lofty ideas and promises that we know very well can't be kept. If it sounds to good to be true, it probably is.
It reminds me of those 6th grade school presidents speeches given. "I promise pizza every Friday and ice-cream every Monday, vote for me" Personally I believe we've fallen for the 6th grade speech.
Second, we need to be pro-active by writing to our representative to voice our opinions on proposed legislation and when we want to voice a positive, "you're doing a good job" or a prodding "you're not doing a good job". Or how about "I support this proposed legislation. As my representative you need to know that". The point being, we need to keep in touch with our elected officials not just on election day, but continually. They need to know we are watching least they slip off to Venezuela or stuff money in their freezers at home.
Thirdly, we need to use the right of protest. To assembly as a community and voice our thoughts and opinions out loud (peacefully of course, but firmly).
Fourthly, we need to pray like the dickens. Prayer in thankfulness of what we have and prayer for those that have not. Pray for our nation to be the light in the world our Father in Heaven wants us to be.
I read this article that does a little 5 month assessment, but I agree with it.

WASHINGTON -- The anti-government protests in Iran following the government's rigged elections are doubtless a little more than the "robust debate" among Iranians that President Barack Obama welcomed during the election. Some of the debaters have been shot dead. Others have been hustled off to jail. I wonder if this is an eye-opener for our novice president.

The Man Can Do No Wrong
Wow, this man can do no wrong. It's very interesting reading/hearing about the actions and reactions of our President Barak Obama.
What a complete 180 degree turn around compared to the coverage of President Bush's administration. At that point Bush could do no right. Now it's the exact opposite.
It's very interesting to see. Case in point, Mark Steyn dissects some of this 'can-do-no-wrong' phenomena concerning the events in Iran.
Bystander-in-Chief
Kathryn, what's striking about the Bystander-in-Chief is that the more he does nothing, the more credit he gets for everything. In the New York Times, Helene Cooper attributes events in Iran to the Obama "stealth effect." The fellows in the street shouting "Death to the dictator!" were apparently inspired to rise up by Obama's outreach to the, er, dictator:
He directed his comments not just to the Iranian people but to Iran’s leaders, and referred to Iran as “the Islamic Republic,” further flagging a willingness to deal with the clerical government. He even went so far as to quote from the vaunted Persian poet Saadi, dead for 700 years now.
So the people's demonstrations against the leaders are a direct result of Obama's willingness to do business with the leaders. Gotcha. What's more, this Moussavi learned everything he knows from Barack:

Bush's Bioethics Panel Replaced with Obama-Ethics
President slowly dismantling the Bush administration with nothing to stand in his way. The latest casualty is The Bioethics Panel, a public voice on issues stem cell research, abortion, medicine, biology and many others.
Essentially, everyone on the panel got a pink slip. Everyone to be replaced by, you guessed it Obama appointees.
"The council was disbanded because it was designed by the Bush administration to be “a philosophically leaning advisory group” that favored discussion over developing a shared consensus, said Reid Cherlin, a White House press officer. " -NYTimes
Oh, this sounds like a non-partisan group of individuals.
No debate just a "shared consensus".

Father's Day Festivities at the White House
Celebrity Festivities at the White House for Father's Day partying.
Tony Hawk one of the invited takes a skateboard ride down the corridors of the White House.
Tony has his broadcast these festivities, including photo's on his website and twitter account. It's easy to see how the White House is using these celebrities to promote the administration.

Pro skateboarder takes a glide through White House
WASHINGTON – Hey, kids, don't try this at home. Professional skateboarder Tony Hawk on Friday took a brief ride at the White House as part of a Father's Day celebration.
Hawk, 41, skated in the grand foyer and the nearby Old Executive Office Building, with the permission of White House officials.
The skateboarding icon, also known for his popular brand of skateboarding video games, posted photos to his Web site and Twitter page.
One photo shows Hawk on his skateboard with his hands in the air in what appears to be a hallway.

Barbara "Ma'am" Boxer - The arrogance
Every time I listen to that video clip I get a little hot under the collar.
Oh the arrogance. This is an individual who has spent his whole career dedicated to protecting this country and her right to be freely elected to office.
To belittle a brigadier general making him address her by her title of honor brings to mind a passage in scripture.

Iran's Spiritual Leader Senses a Threat to His Power
Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei is sensing a threat to his power. I doubt he has the spiritual well being of the people he represents.
It's his power he really has concern with, thus his stern warning on Friday to 'Crackdown' on the peaceful protesters.
Here in the States we see the Connecticut State government trying to stifle the Catholic church with cries of 'lobbyist' and threats of fines and such. Not quite the level of Iran but heading none the less in the wrong direction.

Red Bull or Coffee?
As I sip my morning cup of java, I ration to myself that "It's only one cup."
"I don't drink coffee all day long."
"And it's better than drinking those nasty tasting energy drinks that are bad for you"
"How can anyone drink that stuff... it's so high in Caffeine?"
Well guess what?
I did an internet search out of curiosity to find out the caffeine content of those energy drinks compared to my cup of java.
I'm not switching from my coffee but this is what I found:

In this case, as CATHOLIC education institutions, they are calling for the U.S. Bishops to tweak a minor Catholic stance:

Yesterday the Association of Catholic Colleges and Universities (ACCU), which represents more than 200 Catholic institutions, released its summer 2009 newsletter, including a report on the ACCU’s board of directors meeting last week. The ACCU directors concluded “that it would be desirable for the [U.S. bishops] to withdraw” their 2004 policy, according to the newsletter.

In this case, as CATHOLIC education institutions, they are calling for the U.S. Bishops to tweak a minor Catholic stance:
IS: “The Catholic community and Catholic institutions should not honor those who act in defiance of our fundamental moral principles. They should not be given awards, honors or platforms which would suggest support for their actions.” (Catholics in the Political Life)
CHANGE TO: 'IT'S OKAY FOR' - “The Catholic community and Catholic institutions TO honor those who act in defiance of our fundamental moral principles. They should BE be given awards, honors or platforms which would suggest support for their actions.”

LCROSS Satellite Launch Today
The NASA's LCROSS (Lunar CRater Observation and Sensing) Satellite is due to launch in about 1 hour an 45 minutes today. The company I work for makes this Satellite.
