Palin/Gibson Interview: Transcript
So here it is...
TRANSCRIPT
The following is a transcript of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin’s interview with ABC News’ Charles
Gibson:
GIBSON: Governor, let me start by asking you a question that I asked John McCain about you. And it is really the central question. Can you look the country in the eye and say, I have the experience, and I have the ability to be not just vice president, but perhaps president of the United States of America?
PALIN: I do, Charlie, and on January 20th, when John McCain and I are sworn in, if we are so privileged to be elected to serve this country, we’ll be ready. I’m ready.
GIBSON: When McCain asked you to take the spot on the ticket, for a moment, did you think no?
PALIN: I did not. I thought yes, right off the bat. When he offered me the position, as his running mate, the first thing I said to him was, if you really think that I can help the ticket, if you really think that I can help this country, absolutely, I want to do this with you.
GIBSON: And you didn’t say to yourself, am I experienced enough? Am I ready?
PALIN: I didn’t hesitate, no.
GIBSON: Doesn’t that take some hubris?
PALIN: I answered him yes because I have the confidence in that readiness. And knowing that you can’t blink. You have to be wired in a way of being so committed to the mission, the mission that we’re on, reform of this country, and victory in the war. You can’t blink. So, I didn’t blink then, when asked to run as his running mate.
GIBSON: But this is not just reforming a government. This is also running a government on the huge international stage, in a very dangerous world. When I asked John McCain about your national security credentials, he cited the fact you have command of the Alaskan National Guard and Alaska is close to Russia. Are those sufficient credentials?
PALIN: But it is about reform of government. And it’s about putting government back on the side of the people. And that has much to do with foreign policy and national security issues.
Let me speak specifically about a credential that I do bring to this table, Charlie. And that’s with the energy independence that I’ve been working on for these years, as the governor of this state, that produces nearly 20 percent of the U.S. domestic supply of energy. That I worked on as chairman of the Alaska Oil and Gas Conversation Commission, overseeing the oil and gas developments in our state, to produce more for the United States.
GIBSON: National security is a whole lot more than energy.
PALIN: It is. But - but I want you to not lose sight of the fact that energy is a foundation of national security. It’s that important. It’s that significant.
GIBSON: Did you ever travel outside the country prior to your trip to Kuwait and Germany last year?
PALIN: Canada. Mexico. And then, that trip that was a trip of a lifetime, to visit troops in Kuwait and stop and visit injured soldiers in Germany. That was a trip of a lifetime. And it changed my life.
GIBSON: Have you ever met a foreign head of state?
PALIN: I have not. And I think if you go back in history and if you ask that question of many vice presidents, they may have the same answer that I just gave you. But Charlie, again, we got to remember what the desire is in this nation, at this time. It is for no more politics as usual. And somebody’s big, fat resume maybe that shows decades and decades in that Washington establishment, where, yeah, they’ve had opportunity to meet heads of state.
GIBSON: Let me ask you about some specific national security situations.
PALIN: Sure.
GIBSON: Let’s start, because we are near Russia. Let’s start with Russia and Georgia. The administration has said, we’ve got to maintain the territorial integrity of Georgia. Do you believe the United States should try to restore Georgian sovereignty over South Ossetia and Abkhazia?
PALIN: First off, we’re going to continue good relations with Saakashvili there. I was able to speak the other day and giving my commitment, as John McCain’s running mate, that we will be committed to Georgia. And we have to keep an eye on Russia. For Russia to have asserted such pressure in terms of invading a smaller democratic country, unprovoked, is unacceptable. And we have to keep …
GIBSON: You believe unprovoked?
PALIN: I do believe unprovoked. And we have to keep our eyes on Russia. Under the leadership there.
GIBSON: What insight into Russian actions particularly in the last couple weeks does the proximity of the state give you?
PALIN: They’re our next door neighbors. And you can actually see Russia from land here in Alaska.
GIBSON: You favor putting Georgia and Ukraine into NATO?
PALIN: Ukraine definitely yes. Yes. And Georgia. Putin thinks otherwise, obviously he thinks otherwise.
GIBSON: Under the NATO treaty, wouldn’t we then have to go to war if Russia went into Georgia?
PALIN: Perhaps so. That is the agreement. When you are a NATO ally, is, if another country is attacked, you are going to be expected to be called upon and help.
GIBSON: Let me turn to Iran. Do you consider a nuclear Iran to be an existential threat to Israel?
PALIN: I believe that under the leadership of Ahmadinejad, nuclear weapons in the hands of his government are extremely dangerous to everyone on this globe, yes.
GIBSON: So, what should we do about a nuclear Iran?
PALIN: We have got to make sure these weapons of mass destruction, that nuclear weapons are not given to those hands of Ahmadinejad, not that he would use them, but that he would allow terrorists to be able to use them. So we have got to put the pressure on Iran.
GIBSON: What if Israel decided it felt threatened and need to take out the Iranian nuclear facilities?
PALIN: Well, first, we are friends of Israel, and I don’t think that we should second guess the measures that Israel has to take to defend themselves, and for their security.
GIBSON: So if we didn’t second guess it and if they decided they needed to do it, because Iran was an existential threat, we would be cooperative or agree with that?
PALIN: I don’t think we can second guess what Israel has to do to secure its nation.
GIBSON: So if it felt necessary, if it felt the need to defend itself by taking out Iranian nuclear facilities, that would be all right?
PALIN: We cannot second guess the steps that Israel has to take to defend itself.
GIBSON: We talk on the anniversary of 9/11. Why do you think those hijackers attacked? Why did they want to hurt us?
PALIN: You know, there is a very small percentage of Islamic believers who are extreme, and they are violent, and they do not believe in American ideals. And they attacked us. And now we are at a point, here, seven years later, on the anniversary, in this post- 9/11 world, where we are able to commit to never again. The only option for them is to become a suicide bomber, to get caught up in this evil, in this terror. They need to be provided the hope that all Americans have, instilled in us, because we’re a democratic and we are a free, we’re a free-thinking society.
GIBSON: Do you agree with the Bush doctrine?
PALIN: In what respect, Charlie?
GIBSON: The Bush — well, what do you interpret it to be?
PALIN: His world view?
GIBSON: No, the Bush doctrine, annunciated September 2002, before the Iraq War.
PALIN: I believe that what President Bush has attempted to do is rid this world of Islamic extremism, terrorists who are hell-bent on destroying our nation. There have been blunders along the way, though. There have been mistakes made, and with new leadership, and that’s the beauty of American elections, of course, and democracy, is with new leadership comes opportunity to do things better.
GIBSON: The Bush doctrine as I understand it is that we have the right of anticipatory self-defense, that we have the right to a preemptive strike against any country that we think is going to attack us. Do you agree with us?
PALIN: Charlie, if there is legitimate and enough intelligent and legitimate evidence that tells us that a strike is imminent against American people, we have every right to defend our country.
GIBSON: Do we have the right to be making cross-border attacks into Pakistan, from Afghanistan, with or without the approval of the Pakistani government?
PALIN: As for our right to invade, we’re going to work with these countries, building new relationships, working with existing allies, but forging new also, in order to, Charlie, get to a point in this world, where war is not going to be a first option. In fact, war has got to be and military strike a last option.
GIBSON: But governor, I am asking you, do we have the right, in your mind, to go across the border, with or without the approval of the Pakistani government?
PALIN: In order to stop Islamic extremists, those terrorists who would seek to destroy America, and our allies, we must do whatever it takes, and we must not blink, Charlie. In making those tough decisions of where we go, and even who we target.
GIBSON: And let me finish with this. I got lost in a blizzard of words there. Is that a yes, that you think we have the right to go across the border, with or without the approval of the Pakistani government? To go after terrorists who are in the Waziristan area?
PALIN: I believe that America has to exercise all options in order to stop the terrorists who are hell-bent on destroying America, and our allies. We have got to have all options out there on the table.
(COMMERCIAL BREAK)
GIBSON: You said recently in your old church, “Our national leaders are sending U.S. soldiers on a task that is from God.”
(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)
PALIN: Pray for our military men and women who are striving to do what is right, also for this country, that our leaders, our national leaders are sending them out on a task that is from God.
(END VIDEO CLIP)
GIBSON: Are we fight
ing a Holy War?
PALIN: That’s a repeat of Abraham Lincoln’s words, when he said, first he suggested, never presume to know what God’s will is, and I would never presume to know God’s will or to speak god’s words, but what Abraham Lincoln had said, and that’s a repeat in my comments, was, let us not pray that God is on our side, in a war, or any other time. But let us pray that we are on God’s side. That’s what that comment was all about, Charlie.
Today is the day that I send my first born, my son, my teenage son, oversees with his Stryker brigade. Four thousand other wonderful American men and women to fight for our country, to fight for our freedoms.
GIBSON: But you went on and said, “There is a plan, and it is God’s plan.”
PALIN: I believe that there is a plan for this world, and that plan, for this world, is for good. I believe that there is great hope and great potential for every country, to be able to live and be protected within inalienable rights, that I believe are God-given, Charlie. And I believe those are the rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
That in my worldview is the grand plan.
GIBSON: Then, are you sending your son on a task from God?
PALIN: I don’t know if the task is from God, Charlie. What I know is that my son has made a decision. I am so proud of his independent and strong decision. What he decided to do, in serving for the right reasons in serving something greater than self, and not choosing a real easy path, where he could be more comfortable and certainly safer.

... McCain did not pay for this video
'Concupiscence Darkens The Intellect' or 'Sin Makes you Stupid'
I can't tell you how many times (sometimes in a single day-shame, :-0 ) that I tell myself
"Boy, how stupid can I get!" after I've stupidly followed the path of sin.
Thank God for Confession/Reconciliation.
Anyways, I can't claim the creation of this saying. I found it on Mark Shea website attached to a pretty good article
enjoy:
How the Enemies of the Normal Are Destroying Obama
It is an old fact of Christian theology that concupiscence "darkens the intellect" -- or, as I prefer to put it in more colloquial terms, "Sin Makes You Stupid."
... see I told you it was there...
The visceral reaction to Sarah Palin by the Enemies of the Normal in the Obama camp is a picture-perfect illustration of this.
From the instantaneous embrace of Trig Trutherism by Andrew Sullivan, Kossites, and various demented contributors to the official Obama Campaign site to the strange theories put forward that Palin is (wait for it) a pro-life hypocrite for not aborting Trig to the bewildered and panicky revelations that Palin is actually on record as praying for friends and being an average high school student, the sheer hatred and terror of the Normal from the manufacturers of Blue State culture is palpable.
Mark Steyn received an e-mail from right here in my home state, the Soviet Republic of Washington, that distills in chemical purity the heart and soul of the Abortion Party's real hatred for Sarah Palin:
This abortion prohibitionist hag won't cut it among women with brains. And BTW she is a good example of reproduction run amok. 5 kids; 1 retard. I wonder if the bitch ever heard of getting spayed.
There is more than the political to a remark like that. It's a spiritual and even demonic hatred, a Herodian hatred I'm not sure can be capped by mere appeals to prudence and reason by people in the Obama campaign who are nervously eyeing the polling data and seeing how the Palin Hate is playing with ordinary people.
MORE
Another example of 'Sin makes you stupid':
Canadian obstetricians worry that the success reate of their Search & Destroy Mission may be in jeopardy
U.S. vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin's loving and highly-publicized acceptance of her Down's syndrome child Trig has some Canadian doctors worried that her example may lead to mothers shunning abortion after diagnosis of Down's syndrome.

They're worried that abortions will go down and people will value life...

It's not over yet... Be Vigilant
Be vigilant is the message.
Still-Gathering Storm
Seven years since the terror attacks on the American homeland claimed the lives of 3,000 innocents and changed the lives of countless more. Seven years of war. Seven years without a terrorist attack at home, and the temptation grows to return to our pre-9/11 ways.
Can we afford to take a "holiday from history"? Two years ago I spoke of "the gathering storm" of anti-American nations - such as Iran, Russia and Venezuela - moving to confront us and was roundly criticized as a fear monger.

We're Still Here! - Big Bang Machine

Schools in!......I think?
"Expand your mind my little book worms!"
Or so we hope. This next article may make you think twice.
When Students Ru the Classroom
...Mark Bauerlein, a professor of English at Emory University, recently gathered together some shocking statistics:
1. The 2006 High School Survey of Student Engagement found that 55 percent of high school students spent less than one hour per week “Reading/studying for class.” Only 10 percent exceeded ten hours per week.
2. The University of Michigan reported in 2004 that homework time for 15-17-year-olds reached only 24 minutes on weekend days and 50 minutes on weekends. Weekday TV time was one hour, 55 minutes.
3.In 2004, the Horatio Alger Association found that 60 percent of teenagers logged five hours of homework per week or less.
So let's change the rules then, so you say. Okay, how about these:
1. Homework grades should be given only when the grades will “raise a student’s average, not lower it.”
2. Students who flunk tests can retake the exam and keep the higher grade.
Teachers cannot give a zero on an assignment unless they call parents and make “efforts to assist students in completing the work.”
3. Teachers must accept overdue assignments.
High school teachers who fail more than 20 percent of their students will need to develop a professional improvement plan and will be monitored by their principals.

Yikes!
Pigs and lipstick....

So did he or didn't he mean to insult Sarah Palin?
For what it's worth, I've looked at the video and I believe that he did NOT mean to insult. And I'm not an Obama fan.
Maybe he was trying to be funny because it seemed like he added 'that pig phrase' at the last moment for affect .... maybe.
What I can't excuss Obama for though, is the fact the he didn't explain himself further when it appears the audience understood or misunderstood 'that pig phrase' to be directed at Sarah Palin.
This is quite clear in the video. Why didn't he add something like "... and I'm not directing this toward Sarah Palin" or "... and I don't mean Sarah Palin" or even "... and I mean the Republican ticket in general"
Almost anything could have been added.
But it seems in the video that he knew that the audience misunderstood him
...and he did nothing!
Therefore, I can NOT give Obama a complete pass on this. So all the hoopla is partially earned on his part.
Whether this episode amounts to anything at voting time remains to be seen.
Anyways, that's my two cents...
LIFE...
In the Beginning...
Both insist that the question of when a human life begins is a theological question, and so one without a generally applicable answer. But in fact, the question of when a new human life begins is not fundamentally a theological question but a biological question. After conception is concluded, a new biological organism exists that did not exist before -- a member of our species in every way, alive and human. That is when the life of that human being starts. That life will proceed in one continuous path until death, whether that comes days later in a lab dish, months later in a clinic, or decades later in a nursing home surrounded by children and grandchildren. Human life has a straightforward scientific definition, and its beginning in biological terms is complicated only by questions about the process of conception itself. When conception is completed and a developing embryo exists, a life has begun.
That fact does not by itself necessarily settle the abortion or embryo research debates. After all this new human being is at first very small, for a little while does not resemble anyone we encounter in our daily life, and at first does not even feel pain or exhibit any but the simplest autonomic responses. The embryo and the fetus are different in some important physical respects from most of us. So the question is not when life begins, but whether every human life is equal.
For some people, this question of equality does have a theological component, for others it does not. But either way the question obviously has a political and legal component, and indeed America's political tradition offers one answer to the question, written in the Declaration of Independence. We can disagree with the answer, but to do so we must take up the appropriate question: not when does life begin, but whether we are all created equal. Do all human beings share in some minimal equal humanity that entitles us to some minimal equal protections, like the protection from intentional killing, regardless of our age, our size, our capacities, abilities, and circumstances?
That's not a question that answers itself. But it is the question at the heart of the abortion and embryo research debates, and Senators Obama and Biden are avoiding the question by insisting they lack an answer to the prior question -- the question of the beginning of life -- which they wrongly assert to be a matter of theology.
Now tell me again which party seeks refuge in theology when it doesn't like the facts that science helps us know.

Joy Behar Campaigns For McCain/Palin Ticket!
Everytime Ms. Joy Behar expresses her political views on the election, she might as well be campaigning for the McCain/Palin ticket.
Just take a look at this segment of Ms. Behar on tonight's Larry King.
LARRY KING/JOY BEHAR VIDEO
Wow, I'd like to link the entire piece but it's not up on YouTube yet. This has got to be embarrassing for the Obama Camp.
... although Obama doing a good job of embarrasing himself... I mean, come on. Pig's with lipstick?
This one is Behar explaining the Catholic Faith, specifically about Saints earlier this year.
Boy, bringing ignorance to a new level...
Biden Side-Steps New Delaware Bishop
Now, it's only a matter of time to see if he will reconcile and change his erroneous position on abortion.
Meeting with the new Bishop W. Francis Malooly of Delaware would be a good start.
He's missed one opportunity...
Biden avoids confrontation with his new bishop
Sen. Joseph Biden did not attend the September 8 installation Mass of Bishop W. Francis Malooly, the new leader of the Wilmington, Delaware diocese where the Democratic vice-presidential candidate lives.
Biden was in Wilmington on Monday morning, but left later in the day for a campaign appearance in Wisconsin, thus avoiding a potential showdown with his new bishop. There was no indication-- either from the senator or from the diocese-- whether Biden had originally planned to attend the afternoon installation.

Beware the Bear: Who Will We Elect?
I'm not trying to be a Nostradamus by any means. The writing is on the wall for everyone to see; Georgia, threatening Poland, Battleships off of Cuba, Oil blackmail of Europe, the list continues to grow.
No scare tactics here... just the real world.
The campaigning end is in sight...
Whom do you think will handle the Bear more effectively.
The Russian Bear Has Awoken
Those of us that grew up in the 1960s and 1970s have an image of a dangerous Russian bear imprinted upon our brains. In 1989, the bear was declawed and our leaders promised us a peace dividend. A peace dividend made perfect sense to a public that was sick of fighting the Cold War. Being able to spend less on our military would allow us freedom to save or spend on other needs. Our businesses would be able to take advantage of new trading partners. All was right with the world.
The rise of Vladimir Putin has changed all of that. Putin recognized where the West was weak and Russia strong. He invested a lot of time and money to take control of the Russian energy industry, even throwing the original owner of the largest Russian oil company into the gulag. Putin has used an iron fist to get control over Russia. The bear is reborn. President Bush ignored the rise of Putin and it has cost us.

Sarah Palin Hit List: Fact or Fiction
Over at Pajamas Media, Charlie Martin has accumulated the list....so far. And tries to set the record straight between fact & fiction.
So her are the first five...but there's plenty more.
Sarah Palin Rumors
1. Yes, she is governor of Alaska. No, she’s not the lieutenant governor. No, she’s not currently mayor of Wasilla. Yes, she was mayor of Wasilla, some years ago.
2. Yes, as governor of Alaska, she’s the commander in chief of the Alaska National Guard. And yes, her professional military subordinate is quite impressed with her in that role.
3. And yes, the New York Times says the job of governor of Alaska is one of the harder, and more powerful, jobs in state government.
4. Yes, there are people in Alaska who think she’s too liberal.
5. Yes, she did giggle when someone called Lyda Green a “bitch.” Yes, Lyda Green is a cancer survivor. Yes, it was the same Lyda Green who tried to force a scheduling conflict that would make Palin miss her son’s high school graduation. Yes, this would also be the Lyda Green who complained no one had asked her about Palin during the vetting process.
Dakota Fanning: The Clean Teen
A young 14 year old actress, who is aware of what the 'Hollywood lifestyle' can do to one's moral lifestyle and promises to steer clear.
She’s agreed: from now to ‘til she’s 18, the star of “The Secret Life of Bees” isn’t going to be holding up any 7-11s, having an unwanted teen pregnancy, or getting any tattoos or piercings.
Of course, this agreement was a light hearted one, made in jest before she went into do press rounds for “Bees.” But she means it. “I swear I won’t do any of those things!” Dakota declared.
I've been very impressed with the movies I've seen her in. It amazes me the seriousness of her acting for such a youngster.
If she can at least keep this mindset (hopfully longer than her 18th birthday), she can be one heck of a role model for up and coming young actors and actresses, teaching them that you don't have to follow the main-stream Hollywood crowd to show your talent.
We'll be rooting for you Dakota...

Catholic Joe Biden: "...It's a personal and private issue."
First Ms. Pelosi tries to redefine Church History and now Sen. Joe Biden follows in her footsteps.
In an interview this weekend with Tom Brokaw on ABC, Biden shows that he too needs to join Pelosi at the nearest RCIA class.
Here's some of his quotes:
" It's a personal and private issue."
Our faith is personal but it is never private. We are called to the light on the bushal basket.
and...
"How am I going out and tell you, if you or anyone else that you must insist upon my view that is based on a matter of faith? And that's the reason I haven't."
Abortion is not a matter of faith or just because the Church tells us so. It's based on NATURAL LAW which our Catholic faith supports. That is why Biden is wrong when he says he can't impose his catholic faith on others in the matter of Abortion.

A Priest Talks about the Elections - Can he do that?
...and Father Frank Pavone does a fine job in this article from the Homiletic & Pastoral Review Magazine
Elections and the Parish by Fr. Frank Pavone
“We encourage all citizens, particularly Catholics, to embrace their citizenship not merely as a duty and privilege, but as an opportunity meaningfully to participate in building the culture of life. Every voice matters in the public forum. Every vote counts. Every act of responsible citizenship is an exercise of significant individual power” (United States Catholic Bishops, Living the Gospel of Life, 1998, n.34).
America and her pulpits
America’s worldview was shaped by her pastors. They preached sermons on very specific and practical aspects of life, including fires, earthquakes and solar eclipses. “Occasional” sermons were sermons preached on significant occasions, and “annual sermons” were preached each year at a given time.
The largest collections of annual sermons were the “election sermons,” which were preached every year for three centuries, starting with the first in Virginia in 1634.
The war for independence did not simply take place on battlefields. It was engaged in the pulpits, where the very hearts and souls of the people were stirred with a commitment to defend the liberty that only God can give. Indeed, the same is true of America’s efforts to rid herself of slavery and of segregation. And today, the same can be said of abortion.
Many of our citizens, and not a few of our preachers, are convinced today that “religion and politics don’t mix.” But the Church teaches otherwise, and in an election year, it’s helpful both to look again at that aspect of her teaching and to take practical steps on the parish level to help people live their faith even in the voting booth.
'08 Elections: Is It Audacity or Authenticity?
Why do the efforts to trash Sarah Palin seem to be failing?
By now it's quite obvious to everyone except the MSM.
These are false personal smear gossip which have no baring on the elections. I've heard the cry from the Barak support media that they want to discuss the issues, however their 'veeping' of Sarah is the exact opposite.
The Alaskan residence have about had it with the 'dirt searching reporters' that have invaded their small towns and cities.
Anyways, here's the post, the Anchoress explains it better than I can.
'08 Election: Coming down to Authenticity?
