Every time I see such programs I can't help but fill that lump in my throat at the lose of life and how that lose took place. All those feels are just automatically brought to the surface again.
I remember the vigils at church, street corners, night time candle vigils, speeches, talks from lay people, priests, pastors, government officials.
In every one of those talks there was an appeal to God or at least His name was mentioned or just the term "God Bless America" was proclaimed or sung.
Mayor Bloomberg's rational for his decision to eliminate religion from the 9/11 remembrances is just totally off base, in every aspect. This article addresses only a few but they are made in charity and to the point.
Blomberg’s 9/11 Gag Rule Insults Catholics
Catholic League president Bill Donohue comments on New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s handling of the 9/11 memorial ceremonies:
Last year, Mayor Bloomberg sought to justify his support for building a mosque near Ground Zero by recalling the bravery of the firefighters on that fateful day. “In rushing into those burning buildings, not one of them asked, ‘What God do you pray to?’” He added, “We do not honor their lives by denying the very constitutional rights they died protecting.”

To put things into perspective, about 3000 people were killed in the terrorist attacks of 9/11.
ReplyDeleteOver 10,000 children have accused priests of child sex abuse at the hands of Catholic priests in the United States alone, in an act called "soul murder", since the child never fully recovers, and they never have the same faith in God. The number is likely 3-5 times that number, since people like Archbishop Dolan immediately try to fight and discredit the victims. Just last month, he discredited the victim when a 16 year old girl came forward to accuse a priest of inappropriate contact.
The Catholic League immediately trashed her, even though the priest himself admitted to massaging her (and why, in God's name, is a priest massaging a girl) and blamed her for wearing very short skirts. Dolan republishes the Catholic League bashing on his blog.
Two of the biggest, loudest mouths in the Catholic church immediately discredit a poor, little 16 year old girl from the Bronx when she comes forward with the umpti-thousandth case of priest predator attacking child.
Think that will stop other victims from coming forward? You bet. Great legal strategy. Horrible church.
Catholic priests, stay away from ground zero on 9/11. We're trying to forget one enemy. We don't need to be reminded of another.
Wow, I don't know where you got those numbers. They are no where near that but even if those numbers are considerable over stated the fact is that one instance is too much.
ReplyDeleteThere are a lot of people of faith that would like to attend and have that faith be apart of the ceremonies. Many used that faith to get through this horrible moment in history.
That's all they and I are asking.
As far as your comments it seems you need to read this Sunday's readings which focus on forgiveness

If that is not enough try to reflect on our Lords own words as he taught us The Lords Prayer, "...forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us....
This is also the message we should bring to the 9/11 ceremonies. This was an act of pure evil, an act which we must do all to prevent from happening again. But forgiveness is a part of that as well.
